The Whitewater High School boys swim team traveled to Jefferson for a triple dual between hosting Jefferson and Platteville.
“It was a fun, fast meet for everyone. (We) swam with a lot of heart, enthusiasm and desire and the results showed this at the end of the meet. We needed these two wins,” head coach Joan Domitrz said.
“The team has been working hard and seeing how fast they could swim coming off our holiday training was both fun and encouraging for all of us going into our end of season phase,” she added.
One team record was broken, by Jon Zidmars in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 22.95.
Other results from the meet included: 200 Medley, first, Wentao Guo, Jon Zimdars, Benny Liang and Jimmy King; 200 Free, first, Andrew Gildner, fourth, Kit Zoesch-Laumann and fifth, Jack Downs; 200 I.M., first, Guo; 50 Free, first, Zimdars and second, Jason Shelbourn; 100 Butterfly, first, Liang and third, Shelbourn; 100 Free, first, Zimdars and sixth, Karlo Marinovic; 500 Free, first, Gildner, fourth, Zoesch/Laumann and sixth, Downs; 200 Free Relay, second place, Shelbourn, Jimmy King, Martinovic and Guo; 100 Backstroke, first, Liang and third, Martinovic; 100 Breaststroke, first, Guo and fifth, Dineth Gunawardena; 400 Free Relay, first, Zimdars, Shelbourn, Gildner and Liang.
The team took part in a non-conference dual meet against Fort Atkinson and struggled, losing 96-74 though the coach said the score is only part of the story.
“While we did not win, we had a really good meet, winning seven of the 11 events and setting five school records in the process,” Domitrz said.
First place finishers included: Zimdars, 100 Fly, new school record; Liang, 100 Free; Shelbourn, 50 Free; the 200 Free Relay team of Zimdars, Shelbourn, Guo and Liang; Zimdars, 100 Back, new school record; Liang, 100 Breast, new school record; 400 Free Relay team of Zimdars, Guo, Shelbourn and Liang.
Whitewater swimmers earning second place finishes included: Guo, 200 I.M.; and Gildner, 500 Free.
Finishing third were: Gildner, 200 Free; Shelbourn, 100 Back and Guo, 100 Breastroke.
Bringing home fourth through sixth place finishes for Whitewater were:
Jacob Korf, Gunawardena, Downs, Ricardo Cid, Martinovic, Zoesch/Laumann, Jimmy King, Gildner and Romeo Manriquez.
