Playing without key players last week, the Delavan-Darien High School boys basketball team dropped two games – a non-conference game to Milton, 67-51, and a Southern Lakes Conference game to Union Grove, 58-52.
On Jan. 13 against Milton, the Comets (4-8, 1-5) were without starters Lucas DeLara and Ethan Cesarz and continue to be without starting point guard Jesse Collins, who looks to return this week.
Without their leading scorer and leading rebounder, the Comets had only 14 rebounds as a team and turned the ball over 15 times.
Milton had a 35-21 halftime lead and outscored the Comets 21-9 in the third quarter on the way to the win.
Isaac Ramos led the Comets with 18 points, and William Brown added 11.
Isiah Ramos had nine points, and Austin Ryan finished with eight.
Friday night the Comets hosted Union Grove and though Cesarz was back in the lineup, the Comets were still without DeLara, and Isiah Ramos was off the roster after an injury, and they lost a close one, 58-52.
After finding themselves down 13-11 in the first quarter, the Comets outscored the Broncos 17-9 in the second quarter.
Jayce Crull tied the game at 21-21 with just over three minutes left in the half, and a basket two minutes later by Brown put the Comets ahead 23-21, the first Comet lead of the game.
Ryan hit a three-point shot, making it 26-21, and, after a Bronco free throw, Cesarz scored at the buzzer, putting the Comets up 28-22.
Later in the third quarter, the Comets started getting sloppy, letting the Broncos get back into the game, and they went ahead 43-39 to end the third quarter.
It took almost four minutes for the Comets to score in the fourth quarter, and Union Grove went on for the 58-52 win.
Isaac Ramos had 15 points in the win, and Ryan added 14 points and three assists.
Brown had 13 points, three assists and three steals, and Cesarz and Crull had four points each.
Cesarz added nine rebounds.
The Comets head to Elkhorn on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game and Tuesday will travel to Wilmot for a 7 p.m. game.
