During last week, the Whitewater High School boys swim team took part in a conference meet and a large tournament and did well in both outings.
Against Badger High School in a dual meet, the Whippets fell in the overall total points but had several individual and relay teams swim well regardless.
The 200 Freestyle Relay (Wentao Guo, Karlo Martinovic, Benny Liang and Jon Zimdars) proved to be the foursome to beat. Guo won the 100 Backstroke and Zimdars came out on top in the 100 Breaststroke.
Guo finished third in the 200 Individual Medley event, Liang won the 50 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle race while Zimdars came in second in the 100 Freestyle event.
The 200 Medley Relay team consisting of: Andrew Gildner, Dineth Gunawardena, Kit Zoesch/Laumann and James King took third place.
Breaking records
In the giant 12-team Beloit Invitational, Whitewater was consistently strong in the pool across the board.
“The coaching staff were very impressed with how our team went after their races at distances they had never competed in before,” head coach Joan Domitrz stated in a recap of the event.
Liang won the 200 Breaststroke, setting a new Beloit Memorial High School pool and meet record at the same time.
Two Whitewater High School records were also broken at Beloit, both by Zimdars: one in the 200 Individual Medley; the other on his 200 Freestyle lead off split of the 800 Freestyle Relay.
Other wins and notable finishes at the invitational included: first place in the 400 Medley Relay (Jason Shelbourn, Liang, Zimdars and Guo); first for Zimdars in the 200 Individual Medley and second in the 200 Fly; a win by Liang in the 200 Breaststroke and fourth in the 200 Fly; Guo took ninth in the 100 Breaststroke event and 10th in the 200 Backstroke; Shelbourn, with an eighth place finish in the 200 Backstroke; and the 800 Free Relay team (Zimdars, Shelbourn, Guo and Liang) with a third place finish.
