On a clear, yet cold pitch last Wednesday, the Lady Whippets soccer team defeated Janesville-Parker 2-0 in a non-conference match at home.
Whitewater dominated the first half by controlling the ball and attacking, putting pressure on the Viking defense. However, it wasn’t until the 8th minute of the second half when Aly Quass put the ball in the back of the net (assisted by Allison Sedmak) to put the Whippets ahead.
Later, in the 56th minute, Sedmak was the one getting the score, assisted by Rebekah Shumacher.
“Back to back games are difficult,” said head AJ Dauti after the game, “but our team rose to the challenge.”
Indeed, the Lady Whippets are looking good so far in the season. It hasn’t been all sunshine though, as Whitewater stands at third in conference behind 3-1 Evansville and undefeated McFarland.
The Whippets also have another lurking problem, they average less than two goals scored per game, which means the defense has hold up to a standard that may not hold for the rest of the season. Coach Dauti seems aware of this development.
“I continue to see many positive aspects of our play, but we’ll need to continue work on finishing for a score,” Dauti said.
Whippets win again
Sometimes, it’s best to just let the good times roll, and with this Whippet team, it seems that they are more than comfortable letting the defense set the tone.
Whitewater defeated Evansville 1-0 on Monday night to improve to 3-1 in conference. Megan Reynolds scored the lone goal in the 28th minute to provide the Whippets with all they would need to finish off the match.
This is not to say it was easy as Evansville was on the attack most of the night.
“The entire defense unit comprised of Erin McManaway, Abby Ramirez, Stephanie Brown, Erika Levine and Rebekah Schumacher played an outstanding game,” coach Dauti said after the match. “All in all the entire team played a complete game and withstood Evansville’s aggressive play.”
