‘Spring into the Past’ at Old World Wisconsin

May events feature kites, sheep, planting and historic foods and Mother’s Day Brunch

When Old World Wisconsin, W372 S9727 Highway 67, Eagle, opens to the general public for the 2014 season on Saturday, May 3, guests to this historic site will be able to enjoy “Spring into the Past” weekends throughout the month, each featuring a different aspect of springtime life in the 1800s and early 1900s.

“We’re sharing some of the seasonal work and pastimes of these Midwestern immigrants. Guests can witness plenty of agricultural chores and we’re also inviting them to join in fun activities like kite flying and tasting foods prepared using historic recipes,” said Jennifer Van Haaften, associate director.

Spring into the Past weekends include:

• May 3-4: Go Fly a Kite: Make and fly kites. The Wisconsin Kiters Club will have high-flying demonstrations Sunday.

• May 10-11: Sheep to Shawl: Guests can watch 19th-century sheep shearing, fleece preparation, spinning and more.

• May 17-18: Plowing and Planting: Help plant a garden, try the new cultivator and see the teams of horses plow the fields using methods dating to the 1800s.

• May 24-25: Tastes of Spring: Watch seasonal foods being prepared and enjoy samples prepared using historic recipes and methods.

Hours and admission are: weekends, May 3-25, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adults, $16; children (5-17), $9 (children younger than 5 are admitted free of charge); students and senior citizens, $14; family pass, $43.

 

Mother’s Day Brunch

Mother’s Day Brunch will be served in the Big, Red Clausing Barn on Sunday, May 11, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Families can celebrate mom and enjoy a breakfast buffet featuring baked french toast, smoked salmon, carved roast beef, cider-roasted chicken, beef tenderloin tips, scrambled eggs, vegetable frittata, sausage, bacon, breakfast potatoes, cheesy potatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy, mediterranean pasta, wild mushroom farfalle, fresh fruit, pasta salad, and an assortment of pastries and desserts.

Cost is $21 for adults, $10 for children ages 5-12, and children 4 and younger eat for free.
