Discover Whitewater Series offers kids’ event

The Greater Whitewater Committee will feature its 2nd annual Discover Whitewater Series (DWS) event Sept. 21. Taking place in conjunction with the half-marathon, half-marathon relay and 5K, will be Working for Whitewater’s Wellness (W3) Fit Kid Shuffle.

The Fit Kid Shuffle will feature a one-mile run geared for kids 12 and under and will be offered free of charge thanks to W3’s Fit Kid Scholarship program.

Scholarships are now available for purchase. For each child sponsored (every $15 donated), contributors will receive a Limited Edition 2014 Discover Whitewater Series Bell. Members of the public interested in providing opportunities for the young runners can do so by calling W3 at (262) 472-1305.

In addition to providing opportunities for young runners, the DWS is an exciting series of events that caters to runners of all ages. To ensure that all family members have the opportunity to participate in this year’s event, a Kids Korral will also be offered.

The Kids Korral is a combined effort of DWS and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s College of Education and Professional Studies. UW-W students and volunteers in education will be available to watch kids younger than 12 years of age in a safe environment while parents participate in the half-marathon or 5K.

Any adult that registers for the DWS can take advantage of the Kids Korral free of charge. Volunteers will have completed a background check and will be managed by Dr. Robin K. Fox, Department Chair, UW-W College of Education and Professional Studies – Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Registration is now open for all events on the website at www.runwhitewater.com. Proceeds form the series will support the following five local organizations: Whitewater Unified School District, Bethel House, UW-Whitewater Athletics, W3 (a local wellness organization), and the Whitewater Aquatic Center.

For more information on volunteering or participating in any of the DWS events, contact Traci Wilson, Assistant Race Director at info@runwhitewater.com or (262) 949-2302.
