The Elkhorn girls swim team had to be pretty happy with its overall effort Saturday at their home Elk Invite.

After all, finishing second behind the two-time defending state champion is a pretty big accomplishment.

“We swam really well and we had some girls really step up and swim some great times,” said coach Jamie Richardson. “Finishing second behind the two-time defending state champion is not bad.

Our depth is starting to step it up like they need to. That has been a forte of our team the last couple of years and it’s great to see that starting to develop this season.”

Milton won the meet with 427 points, followed by Elkhorn’s A team with 353. The Elkhorn B team finished 10th with 43 points.

The meet was held at the Elkhorn pool, which means times are calculated in meters, not yards. Hence, what is normally the 500-yard freestyle became the 400-meter free, and times are slower because of extra distance.

At the invite, the top eight medaled and for the Lady Elks that meant six relay medals and 10 individual medals. Earning silver medals were Anne Blackbourn in the 100 freestyle and Kady Ruemmele in the 100 backstroke.

“Anne had a very strong second 50 and is a finisher,” said Richardson. “She has that never say die attitude that a coach can’t teacher. Kady had great walls off of her turns.” Blackbourn and Ruemmele also brought home the bronze medal in the 50 freestyle and 200 individual medley.

“Anne had great turnover during her 50 race,” said Richardson. “Kady dropped .53 seconds in her race. She is a hard worker every day in practice. She practices like it is a race and that makes her the competitor she is.”

Finishing fourth in the 100 backstroke was Lilly Remington. “Lilly dropped .36 seconds off her time,” said Richardson. “We have been working on long walls and she did a better job of this during her race.”

Finishing sixth in the 100 breaststroke was Savanna Kreiser. “Savanna had great pullouts off her walls,” said Richardson.

Finishing seventh in the 100 freestyle was Emily Ames who dropped .81 seconds off her time. “Emily had a nice start off the blocks,” said Richardson. Elkhorn’s final medals were eighth place medals for Linnea Baas in the 200 and 400 freestyle events, as well as Remington in the 50 freestyle.

“Linnea dropped .67 seconds off of her time in the 200 freestyle and 1.38 seconds in the 400 freestyle,” said Richardson. “She had nice consistent splits, nice long strokes and looked strong. Lilly dropped .13 seconds in the 50 and had a great finish to earn a medal.”

The Elks also had two medal-winning relays in each of the three relay events.

Also last week, Elkhorn opened its Southern Lakes Conference season with a 126-43 win on the road at Delavan-Darien.

“We were able to mix things up against Delavan and try some new things,” said coach Jamie Richardson. “The girls swam well and responded to trying some new events and new relay combinations to see what we could do.”

The Lady Elks finished first in nine of the 11 events and went 1-2-3 in four events.
