Five wrestlers advance to sectional

Five Delavan-Darien High School wrestlers advanced out of Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association regional action into the sectional round that will be held Saturday in Waupun.

Seniors Dan Loomer, Landon Schramski, Cody Chelminiak, Ricardo Cruz and Hunter Gramly will have their seasons continue in Waupun after picking up either first- or second-place finishes.

Regional champs for the Comets were Schramski at 120 pounds, Chelminiak at 126 pounds and Cruz at 220 pounds.

Loomer and Gramly posted second-place finishes.

Schramski started his day with a bye in the quarterfinal round and then pinned Michael Fernandez of Whitewater at 5:14. In his first-place match, Schramski pinned Chris Else of Catholic Memorial at 1:29.

Chelminiak also had a bye to start with and in the semi-finals pinned Jimmy Cushman of Whitewater at 1:51. Chelminiak finished his day with a pin over Gabe Braam of East Troy at 1:59.

Cruz had three matches to get to his first-place win, starting with a pin at 1:32 over Bruce Peche of Whitewater. In the semifinals Cruz pinned Brendon Krull of Jefferson and then in the first-place match won a 5-4 decision over Will Utesch of Big Foot/Williams Bay for first place.

At 106 pounds Loomer took second after going 3-1. Loomer started with a bye and then won his semi-final by technical fall over Jameson Hutchins of Whitewater. In the first-place match Loomer lost 13-2 to Travis Berryman of Big Foot/Williams Bay. Loomer won the second-place match over Hutchins from Whitewater by rule.

Gramly wrestled at 132 pounds and beat Brendan Smith of Jefferson in the quarterfinal match by a pin at 3:52. In the semifinals, Gramly lost to Ryan Engel of East Troy, 7-4. In his third-place match Gramly beat Austin Duhigg of Big Foot/Williams Bay by a 7-2 decision and then won the second-place match by beating David McLeod of Catholic Memorial by a 6-3 decision.
