Comets take down Westosha Central by 22

Shooting 55 percent from the field helped lift the Delavan-Darien High School girls’ basketball team to its first Southern Lakes Conference win as the Comets beat Westosha Central 59-37 Feb. 3.
In another conference game, the Comets lost to Lake Geneva Badger last Thursday 65-25 to go to 1-7 in the conference and 3-11 overall.
At Westosha, the Comets found themselves down 17-12 to start the game before staging a comeback in the second quarter.
“I thought in the Westosha game that we came out too relaxed and not ready for a game, which put us behind right away,” D-DHS head coach Hank Johnson said.
It was a lopsided second quarter that was the difference in the game, with the Comets outscoring the Falcons 15-5.
“To start the second quarter, we decided to change up the defense, and it helped get us going, which was great to see,” Johnson said. “We also did a great job of breaking the press, resulting in layups.”
With the 27-22 halftime lead the Comets went into the third quarter and continued to dominate both offensively and defensively, outscoring the Falcons 19-9 in the third quarter to go up 46-31.
In the final quarter of action, the Comets outscored Westosha 13-6 to cruise to the 59-37 win.
“It was a team win against Westosha since we were short-handed. Everyone got into the game,” Johnson said.
The Comets played without Megan Butke, one of the Comets’ leading scorers and rebounders who is out with an ankle injury.
Kylie Collins had 15 points to lead the Comets, and Macie Hill, Jennah Speth and Claudia Nieuwenhuis added nine points each.
Kenna Timmerman added seven points, and Alex Lewis finished with six.
Lewis added five rebounds and Speth had five assists.
Hosting Badger last Thursday the Comets couldn’t stop the Badger offense and had trouble getting their own offense going, resulting in the 65-25 loss.
Timmerman had eight points for the Comets, and Speth added seven.
The Comets will look for their second conference win Friday night when they host Westosha Central at 6 p.m. This game is part of a doubleheader with the boys playing at 7:45 p.m.
