The Lake Geneva Badgers took down Westosha Central in overtime last Friday 60-58 at home in Southern Lakes Conference basketball action.
Badger led after one quarter 13-10 but went ice cold in the second quarter as the Falcons (5-9, 2-6 SLC) outscored them 18-5 and led 28-18 at the half. The Badgers came out after halftime and reversed things in the third quarter outscoring Westosha Central 17-8 and trailed just 36-35 at the end of three. Badger won the fourth quarter 17-16 to set up overtime.
Westosha Central led late in the fourth quarter 52-47. Jake Berhorst hit a long jumper from just inside the three-point arch to make it 52-49. Jake Kozlowski then nailed a three to tie the game. Badger had a chance to win it in regulation as Lincoln Wieseman drove the lane with seconds on the clock, but he was called for an offensive foul. The Falcons had time for a full-court desperation heave that fell short.
Westosha Central’s Marshall Gilbert put the Falcons up 54-52 with the first basket of overtime. Tony Ashley answered right back with a basket of his own to tie it back up. Gilbert later got a steal and a layup to make it 56-54. Wieseman tied it back up with two free throws.
Ben Graveley scored to put the Falcons back up by two but that would be the last points of the night for Westosha Central. Kozlowski missed a three-pointer but Derrick Buntrock nailed one to put Badger up 59-58. Kozlowksi added a free throw to provide the final points.
Badger missed a couple of opportunities in the last minute to extend its lead and get some breathing room, and the Falcons missed some chances to tie or take the lead. In particular, Gilbert missed both free throws after being fouled in the lane for Westosha, and Kozlowski missed two for Badger. A desperation half-court shot by Ronald Hall was Westosha’s last chance as time expired, and it was offline.
Wieseman led Badger with 14 points. Ashley added 12 and Buntrock had 11. Glenn Karsten led the Falcons with 17. Graveley added 15.
Badger (8-7, 3-5 SLC) defeated Baraboo (2-15) in non-conference action on Saturday 66-53. Kozlowksi led the way with 16 points. Berhorst had 14, and Logan Tenney chipped in 11. Nick Stack led Baraboo with 10.
Badger played at Delavan-Darien Tuesday night and plays at Burlington tomorrow night. Badger’s game in Union Grove that was postponed due to weather on Jan. 28 was rescheduled for Feb. 11. A previous game that was postponed at Sussex Hamilton will be made up the night before on Feb. 10.
Girls take down Falcons
The Badger girls beat Westosha Central in the other half of a home double header 48-40 last Friday. The Badgers improved to 12-3 (6-1 SLC) on the season with the win.
Westosha Central (5-8, 1-5) took a two-point lead after one, 13-11. Badger eased ahead 25-22 at the half. Things remained tight in the second half as the Badger defense held the Falcons in single digits for the remaining three quarters of play but the Badger offense could not open much daylight. Badger won the second half 23-18.
Lily Quinn led the Badgers with 14 points. Andrea Chironis added 11. Leading scorer Maria Mieres-Rey was held to six. Madi Stanczak led the Falcons with 18. No one else made it into double figures.
Badger played at Muskego on Tuesday night and plays at Delavan-Darien tonight. A make-up game scheduled for Saturday with Union Grove will instead be played on Feb. 17. Badger’s Jan. 28 home game with Wilmot will be made up on Feb. 25.
Wrestlers beat Wilmot
The Badger wrestling team defeated a short-handed and overmatched Wilmot team 73-6 on Jan. 30. Six of Badger’s wins came on forfeits, and Wilmot’s only win came via a forfeit.
Individual wins for Badger included pins by Nick Halpin at 195 pounds, Ruben Garcia at 220, Andrew Nugent at 285, Steven Dublin at 138, and Tony Howard at 152. George Somerville at 106 pounds won by major decision, and Bryan Nugent at 145 won by decision.
Badger faced Union Grove at home on Tuesday and will compete at Union Grove in the conference meet on Saturday.
Swim takes third
The Badger swim team finished third at the Racine Invitational on Saturday with 263 points. Racine Case won the invitational with 362 and Kenosha Tremper took second with 360. Elkhorn finished eighth with 154, and Burlington took 10th with 130.
Remy Glogovsky led the way earning Badger’s only individual first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.58) and taking third in the 100-yard backstroke (59.21). Andrew Shane took third in the 100-yard freestyle (51.28).
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Glogovsky, Shane, Tom Ritzman and R.J. Szweda finished first (3:28.55). The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Glogovsky, Shane, Szweda and Jimmy Corpus finished second (1:35.02).
The Badgers also defeated Elkhorn in a dual meet 109-61 on Jan. 30.
First-place finishes for Badger were:
• Glogovsky in the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.31) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.11);
• Shane in the 50-yard freestyle (23.58) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.58);
• Ritzman in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.44);
• The 200-yard medley relay team (1:52.45);
• The 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:35.33); and
• The 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:33.54).
The team will compete at the conference meet in Delavan on Saturday.
