Schools closings won’t affect calendar, yet

Unlike some of the nearby school districts, the East Troy schools will not have to make up the recently cancelled school days due to the extreme cold weather.

For the second time this year, below freezing temperatures and dangerous wind chills closed schools in Southeastern Wisconsin and across the state. Most area schools were closed Monday and Tuesday when wind chills reached close to -40 degrees at times.

“We are still OK,” said Katherine Zwirgzdas, School District administrator of Business Services. “Monday was a scheduled day off anyway. So, Tuesday still falls within the allotted five days allowed without a make up day needed.”

According to Zwirgzdas, state statute allows for five days off in the 180-day school calendar for all-day parent-teacher school conferences and/or inclement weather days.

“We don’t do any school-day conference days like other districts, so that gives us five full days for things like this,” she said. “Tuesday’s day off brings us to a total of four days this school year so far.”

The cold snap cancellations weren’t limited to school days. Numerous high school and middle school sporting events and Monday night’s meeting of the East Troy School District Board of Education were cancelled as well.
