Melody Butt, the East Troy mother convicted of child neglect in 2012 after her infant twins drowned in a bathtub while she slept, was involved in a minor car crash Sunday afternoon.

According to Village of East Troy Police Chief Alan Boyes, Butt’s car drove off the roadway next to the McDonald’s drive through on the corner of highways 20 and ES shortly before noon Jan. 19. He said the car traveled about seven feet into the adjoining field and struck a boulder, causing a flat tire.

Boyes said Monday Butt was “taken into custody and placed on a probation hold.”

Butt was sentenced to one year in jail and 14 years probation on June 14, 2012, in the death of her children. The terms of her probation included no unsupervised contact with minors, including her own children, without her probation agent’s permission and no alcohol or illegal drugs.

She was warned at the time of sentencing that any violations of the terms of her 14 years on probation would result in sending her to prison for five years.

Boyes said the matter was still under investigation, and he couldn’t comment on whether alcohol or drugs may have been a factor. He did say the officer on the scene reported there was ice on the roadway and it may have been an issue as Butt “went off the road as she entered the parking area.”

Boyes said more information would be available early next week.
