Against Union Grove, the Comets played a great first half, putting 34 points on the board and outscoring the Broncos by eight, and they held a 34-26 halftime lead.

“I thought the girls played their best half of the season against Union Grove in the first half,” D-DHS head coach Hank Johnson said.  “We did a good job of attacking the rim and getting close shots in the paint. We also were patient with our press break and didn’t turn the ball over.”

The second half was a different story for the Comets. The offense put only 11 points on the board, including only two in the third quarter.

The Comets came within one late in the game off great free throw shooting by Megan Butke, but were unable to get the win, losing 46-45.

“In the second half Union Grove picked up their defensive intensity like we knew they would and got us to turn the ball over,” Johnson said. “It was an exciting game and I can’t fault the girls for their effort. They kept hustling throughout the entire game.”

Butke paced the Comets with 13 points and Jennah Speth added 10.

Macie Hill and Alex Lewis had eight points each.

Saturday in Waterford, the Comets never found their offensive rhythm and were outscored 31-18 in the first half, despite it being a close game at times.

“I thought we could have done a better job of running our offense. However, we kept it close in the first half,” Johnson said.

A slow third quarter again cost the Comets when they only put three points on the board, and the Wolverines got the 58-30 win.

Butke had nine points in the loss, and Speth added six.

The Comets host Big Foot Saturday night starting at 7:30 p.m. in non-conference action.

Tuesday the Comets travel to Elkhorn for a 7 p.m. game
