It was a record-breaking game for the Delavan-Darien High School boys’ basketball team on Nov. 26, but the Comets came up short in a 70-69 loss to Union Grove.

The Comets made 11 three-point baskets, a new Comet record, with Isiah Ramos making seven of those in the Comets’ loss to the Broncos – a team predicted to finish on top of the Southern Lakes Conference.

“We played a very close, hard fought game on the road,” D-DHS head coach Bob Beighton said.  “Union Grove is the Yearbook (Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook) pick to win the conference, and they played like it.  The fact that we went toe to toe with them and gave ourselves a chance to win on the road is encouraging.”

The Comets played even with the Broncos the entire game, and it came down to a shot with four seconds to go, that lifted the Broncos to the one-point win.

At the end of one quarter, the score was tied 15-15, and by halftime the Comets had built a three-point advantage at 33-30.

The Comets edged their lead to four points at the end of the third quarter, taking a 54-50 advantage heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Comets had the one-point lead at 69-68 before the Broncos scored with 4.3 seconds left, lifting them to the 70-69 win.

Isiah Ramos paced the Comets with a career high 31 points, making all eight of his free-throw attempts, and going 7-for-10 from the three-point line.

Isaac Ramos added 14 points, and Jesse Collins had 10 points.

John Damrow added nine points and eight rebounds.

Stephen Rodriguez led the Comets with five assists and added four points.

The Comets are still looking for their first win of the season, losing their first three games by a total of seven points.

They will try to get that win tonight in Lake Geneva. Game time is 7 p.m.

Tuesday the Comets host their first game of the season when Wilmot comes to town for a 7 p.m. game.
