Students to tour manufacturing facilities

Students from Elkhorn Area, Delavan-Darien and Badger high school will have a chance to tour three to four manufacturing facilities in their area during Manufacturing Day on Oct. 4.

The Walworth County Economic Development Alliance and the Walworth County Job Center are teaming up with schools and companies to host the event. This day aims to build broader awareness of the types of opportunities available to students, employers and educators in the area. Specifically, students will be given the opportunity to explore and understand the careers that exist in manufacturing to help meet the future employment needs of local employers.

Participating manufacturing facilities are Brunk Industries, Yunker Industries, and Medicoil Inc. of Lake Geneva; Precision plus, Brighton Cosmetics, MedPlast, Certified Power, and Hudapack of Elkhorn; and Micro Precision, SPX and Mode Industries of Delavan.

On the tours, students will learn everything there is to know about manufacturing in Wisconsin. Though it is very likely to be the same in different areas too, here, students will have the ability to see how important utilizing industrial labels can be to the different manufacturing processes, as well as how they are able to streamline their work in order to make them as successful as possible.

Despite misconceptions that manufacturing careers are low-tech, dead-end jobs, today’s manufacturing environment offers many career paths filled with problem-solving, teamwork, research, product development, high-tech assembly, engineering, and analysis, according to the Walworth County Economic Development Alliance. There is a lot that goes into manufacturing, it is not just pressing buttons and standing in a line, there is a level of knowledge that has to be used to make sure products are being made correctly and safely for buying customers. For example, the use of substances like humiseal 1a33 during the process will need to be handled correctly and added when specifically needed, if this is missed off then there could be a cause to scrap the whole line of products. Attention to detail is essential and these students will be able to see the intricacies that go into it all.

People also tend to think of manufacturing jobs are people handling huge sheets of metal and large machinery. This is why a cosmetics manufacturing facility has been included to show that it’s more than this. For example, Impacked list a range of packaging suppliers on their site that just goes to show how many different options there are for cosmetic businesses have when looking for their product to be manufactured.

The goal of the Walworth County Economic Development Alliance and its partners through the tours is to raise awareness within Walworth County about the importance of manufacturing. Every dollar earned in manufacturing in Walworth County has a multiplier effect, with at least three dollars in additional income for suppliers to these manufacturers, according to the alliance.

The top concern of manufacturing chief executive officers throughout Walworth County is finding and developing the next generation of employees from shop floor associates and supervisors to office staff, engineers and managers, according to the Walworth County Economic Development Alliance.
