A one-stroke victory is close, but it’s still a victory.

The Elkhorn Area High School girls golf team opened its Southern Lakes Conference season Aug. 21 with a 214-215 victory over Wilmot at Twin Lakes Country Club.

The teams played the back nine, a par-35 course.

“We kind of struggled for a while and as the scores were coming in it didn’t look good,” Elks’ coach Steve Fisher said. “I was kind of shocked. I was thinking we might lose and we pulled it out at the end.”

Wilmot’s Brittany Loveless led all golfers with a 47 and earned medalist honors. Hannah Grobelny led Elkhorn with a 48.

Elkhorn’s Sally Lesniak scored a 54 and Sarah Rowe and Riley Shirk each carded 56. Audrey Entwistle finished at 64.

For Wilmot, Marnie Destree shot 51 and Madison Hahn finished at 56. Mackenzie Ostrander carded a 61 and Paige Buchanan at 62.

Elkhorn played Monday at Brighton Dale Links in Kansasville in an invitational meet hosted by Westosha Central.

The Elks played a SLC match Tuesday against Waterford at Waterford’s Evergreen Golf Club and play another SLC match today against Badger in Lake Geneva at Hawk’s View Golf Club.
