School Board OKs staff appointments

Last Monday, the Elkhorn Area School Board met briefly to approve several staff appointments.

The following appointments were unanimously approved by the board: Adam Bretl, middle school assistant principal; Dana Marty, high school reading specialist; Cortney Netzel, high school vocal music long-term substitute; Kelly Adkins, Tibbets Elementary School health aide; Darrin Davey, district van driver; Kristina Taylor, Jackson Elementary School teaching assistant and Renee Chambers, Jackson special education teaching assistant.

For his part, Bretl addressed the board regarding his background.

“I’ve lived in Elkhorn the last six years, and I was born in raised in the small town of Sturgeon Bay,” he said. “ … I came from a very successful working experience teaching 8th grade science and 7th grade social studies and reading in Janesville.”

In other business, Educators Credit Union updated the board on its 7th annual block party. According to the credit union, the event helped raise more than $1,314, which was presented to the district to fund financial literacy initiatives in the district.

Other matters

District enrollment. Preliminary numbers indicated 24 less students enrolled within the district when compared to the 2012-13 school year, according to district Superintendent Jascon Tadlock.

2013-14 Elementary and Secondary Education Act grant.  The board was made aware the district received $400,310 in grant money for improving academic achievement of the disadvantaged. The figure represents a 15 percent decline from the previous school year.

$73,256 was received for preparing, training and recruiting teachers and principals, a 5 percent decrease, and $25,556 was received for English language acquisition.
