An established, locally owned bakery and coffee shop will soon dot Whitewater’s main drag, following a recent decision by city officials.

The Whitewater Plan Commission last week voted to award a conditional-use permit to business owner Lacey Reichwald, who plans to open a second location of her SweetSpot Bakehouse operation at 1185 W. Main St.

According to the plans she submitted to commissioners, Reichwald plans to operate a restaurant, production bakery and coffee shop within the facility. A drive-thru also is included in the plans.

In her presentation on the application to commissioners, City Planner Latisha Birkeland recommended moving forward with the proposal.

“This is an appropriate use for this area of the city,” Birkeland said. “Many other existing commercial uses (within the area) have drive-thru windows. If cars were in a line at the drive-thru, there is enough stacking room available to handle the cars.”

Sweet Spot has become a staple in the city, having operated a store for eight years at 226 W. Whitewater St. Reichwald said she plans to continue operating at the flagship store.
