Richard “Dick” Elston Humphrey, a native of Whitewater, died Aug. 16, 2012, at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vt., surrounded by his family. He was cared for at home through a long illness by his loving wife of 58 years, Lois O’Brycki Humphrey.
Richard was born March 5, 1926, the youngest child of Heywood Cuthbert Humphrey and Mary Viola Wightman, in Whitewater, and graduated from high school there.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army during the Japanese occupation, and then returned to Wisconsin to complete his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Later in life he earned a further degree in accounting at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y.
As a chemical engineer, Richard worked initially for Allied Chemical, and then was employed as a production supervisor by Hercules Imperial (later CIBA-Geigy).
He resided in Glens Falls, N.Y., from 1962-2009, where he was an active member at First Presbyterian Church, and contributed to many initiatives for schools, sports, and the arts.
After retirement, he pursued a second career in bookkeeping, as well as hobbies including model railroading, stamp collecting, genealogy, and following the Wisconsin Badgers, Green Bay Packers, and Chicago Cubs.
Survivors include his three children and their families: Gary (Lynn) Humphrey of Queensbury, N.Y., with their son, Garrick and daughter, Paige, Lori (Tim) Humphrey Newcomb of Champaign, Ill., and Amy Jo Humphrey and Tad Dippel of Shelburne, Vt., and their two sons, Max and Milo, as well as many nephews, nieces, and their families.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William W. Humphrey of New York City, and James N. Humphrey of Newton, Mass.; and a sister, Margaret Elizabeth H. Jaeger of Green Bay.
Arrangements are being handled by Stephen C. Gregory and Son Cremation Services of Shelburne, Vt.
