Whitewater hardballers drop season opener

The Whitewater High School baseball team took it on the chin Saturday in opening season action. The Whippets hosted Delavan-Darien in non-conference action and the Comets handed the Whippet boys a 19-6 defeat.

Delavan-Darien jumped on Whitewater with seven runs in the top of the first, most of which were unearned.

“I could tell there were some first-game jitters,” head coach Ray Lauersdorf said, noting the team made some mental errors which led to Comet runs.

Delavan-Darien made it 8-0 in the second and 9-0 in the third before Whitewater pushed two runs across in the bottom of the third.

Those two runs came about off a triple by Brandon Roe, which plated one run, followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Scott Gorsuch.

The Comets made it 14-2 in the top of the fourth, but the Whippets tallied three runs in their half of the inning.

A triple by Andy Tautges plated two of those three runs, and then Tautges came home on a suicide squeeze by Jacob Maas.

Whitewater’s sixth run came in the bottom of the fifth off a sacrifice fly by Sam Leibbrand.

“We just have to do a better job of getting ourselves out of jams,” Lauersdorf said.

Only four of the Comets 19 runs were earned as Whitewater committed six errors defensively.

Tautges pitched the first two innings, giving up eight runs (only two earned) on seven hits and four walks. He struck out one.

Gorsuch pitched the other three innings, giving up 11 runs (only two earned) on seven hits and three walks. He struck out four.

Dan Schumacher led the Whippets in hitting, getting three hits in three at-bats, and scoring a run.

Roe was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Tautges was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Schedule

On Saturday, April 13, the boys will travel to East Troy for an RVC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.

Next week, the Whippets will host McFarland on Tuesday, April 16, at 4:45 p.m., and then will be at McFarland on Thursday, April 18.
