Like just about everything else lately, the Elkhorn Food Pantry is going online.

As a way to make the pantry more accessible, the pantry recently added an online ordering system.

The pantry, which serves those who live in the Elkhorn Area School District, has already had its first two online orders.

“It cuts down the time they have to spend here,” said Tim Middleton, who is leading the online ordering project as a volunteer. “It allows us a little more flexibility in putting the order together.”

Shirley Bultman, president of the food pantry board, said that almost everything has gone online, prompting the pantry to go that direction as well.

“Everything is going online, and we have to join them,” Bultman explained, saying they are the first pantry in the county to go online.

Middleton added that the goal is to increase accessibility.

“The access to the inside of our building was limited due to COVID-19, and still is,” Middleton said. “Our hope is as we get more familiar with it, we’ll be able to increase the times food can be picked up.”

Pantry hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. Online ordering is available at elkhornfoodpantry.com; a yellow button that reads “click here for grocery list” is where people can then order online.

“It’s big and yellow and easy to see,” Middleton said. “You click on the items that you want and click submit. It’s that easy.”

If residents have not been to the pantry before, they must first stop in and register.

The pantry has existed since 1973, and this is just the latest step forward.

“We know that food insecurity is a big issue nationwide, and in Walworth County,” Middleton said. “This is one of the things we are trying to do to increase our reach.”
