The gift of hope

Gift card donations requested for Elkhorn area families

For many years, Hope Now of Elkhorn and the Elkhorn Area School District have coordinated food and gift assistance for families in need during the holidays.

The compassion and generosity of so many donors have answered that call for assistance.

This year, because of the coronavirus, it’s a different world, which requires organizers of this partnership to re-think their usual procedure for assistance offered so kindly by donors. In order to limit exposure of the donors, volunteers and families to households other than their own, this year’s request for donations is for food cards and store gift cards.

“While we know gift cards are not as fun or engaging as preparing a food box or purchasing and wrapping gifts for a particular child or family, we feel this is our best alternative in these times,” organizers stated in a press release. “We certainly look forward to a return to ‘the world we knew’ to celebrate the holidays in 2021.”

Hope Now requests donations of the following:

  • Grocery gift cards – Piggly Wiggly, Aldi’s and Walmart;
  • Store gift cards – Kohl’s Target, Walmart, etc.).

Gift cards will be distributed to families in need based on family size.

If a person or family, a community club or organization or a work department would like to support a family or child, organizers can provide basic information about a specific family. This will allow the donor(s) to know their gift cards and holiday greeting will go to that particular family.

“Thank you so much for your continued support of the hope for the holidays program,” the release stated.

Grocery and store gift cards are due by Dec. 10.
