‘Movin’ to End Abuse’ fundraiser planned

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness month, New Beginnings APFV is hosting a virtual fundraiser, Victory Over Violence: Movin’ to End Abuse.

The event will be held over the last two weeks in October (18-31.) Participants will be asked to find sponsors to support them as they perform any physical activity of their choosing on their own for a total of five hours.

For example, the activity can be anything from running, walking, cycling, swimming, etc. Even walking the dog will count.

New Beginnings APFV is the non-profit domestic violence support and advocacy agency serving Walworth and Southern Jefferson Counties. One in four women will experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime.

In addition, every two minutes in the United States, someone is sexually assaulted and it’s usually by a person they know and trust. New Beginnings APFV helps victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, harassment, stalking and human trafficking as well as their affected family members.

A variety of services are provided, including a 24-hour hotline, legal advocacy, and support groups. Annually, they serve nearly 1000 clients. The stress of living with the COVID-19 pandemic is taking its toll and has made the need for services even greater this year.

To support this mission, New Beginnings APFV- relies heavily on grants. However, about 15% of its annual budget is secured through individual donations, corporate donations, and fundraising. In the past, New Beginnings has hosted three fundraisers a year. In 2020 it has not been possible to hold those fundraisers, so the organization is hosting the virtual Victory Over Violence: Movin’ to End Abuse fundraiser.

“As we navigate our way through the pandemic and all of the change it brings with it, we are embracing our flexibility, strength and determination. We would like to host our annual face-to-face fundraisers this year but have opted to host a virtual event to benefit New Beginnings instead,” said New Beginnings Executive Director Suzi Schoenhoft.

“We are hopeful you will accept our invitation. We thank you for your support and understanding with this shift in plans,” she added.

Besides providing a reason to exercise while raising money that is used to provide needed support locally in the communities that New Beginnings APFV serves, participants will be motivated by a couple of prizes. A prize will be awarded for the participant who raises the most money from sponsors and a second prize will be awarded by a raffle including all participants.
