Studio 84’s recent Chocolate Affair: Cupcake War competition was a sweet treat for ticker-holders and the nonprofit art studio.

The annual Cupcake War event celebrates chocolate and the art of baking while raising money for Studio 84, which specializes in the creative development of people with disabilities.

Eight bakers entered their cupcakes and 48 ticket-holders served as judges who voted on the best-tasting and best-decorated cupcakes. People could also purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win one of two chocolate prizes created by board member Julie Witt.

This year’s bakers were: Sarah Hoots, Addison Sievers, Meredith Campbell, Jeanne Jonely, Angie Stevenson, Jasmine Haag, Katie Krueger and Lacey Rebarcheck.

Rebarcheck took best-tasting cupcake honors while Campbell was recognized for best-decorated cupcakes.

Aimlee Sorenson and Dennis Hillary were the raffle winners.

The event raised more than $1,500 for Studio 84, which will help organizers to cope with losses due to the pandemic.

“Our artists are back in the studio as of July 7th after almost four months of being closed. To maintain as much safety as possible, we are operating at about a 25 percent capacity with returning artists,” Director Deborah Blackwell said in a news release. “They are excited to be making art again and those who are in our career program are anxious to be selling their work again, too.

Blackwell said sales went down to zero during the shutdown but are slowly making a comeback.

“All of their art fairs for the summer and fall had been canceled. Right now the only way they are able to sell their work is with our online store and they hope you will consider buying some of their items for holiday gifts this year,” she said.
