Habitat for Humanity begins build

Walworth County project leaders seeking volunteers

Habitat for Humanity in Walworth County announced late last week that the many months of planning, design, soliciting bids, and negotiating are coming to fruition. Despite the coronavirus, critical contractors have been stepping forth and moving dirt on the site, which is in Bloomfield.

The early work that is being done on the lot, including excavating and pouring concrete, is contractor based. Now that it’s mid-July, Habitat is seeking numerous volunteers to help with the build.

Habitat for Humanity will be taking the necessary measures in order to insure safety among those on the build site in relation to the coronavirus.

“We will be limiting the amount of volunteers on the build site, offering gloves and masks to all volunteers, as well as checking temperatures before personnel will be allowed on the site to help protect everyone that is involved,” project leaders said.

Saturdays will be dedicated volunteer workdays for the build and they are seeking volunteers with a range of skill sets from someone who’s a carpenter or good with a hammer to those available to collect waivers, hand out masks, or hustle coffee and donuts and prepare snacks for the workday.

“There is a job for everyone,” they said.

Volunteers will be welcome on the build site, at Myrtle and Chicago streets in Bloomfield beginning Saturday, July 25 and every Saturday thereafter, virus and weather permitting.

The workdays are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. – or whatever helpers can endure. Though it’s not required, volunteers are encouraged to bring their own hand tools while Habitat provides the guidance and safety equipment.

“The excitement about the Habitat build in Bloomfield is indeed building a house along-side Sarah and family, but there is a special benefit in meeting fellow volunteers and participating with newfound neighbors, whether serving coffee or pounding nails,” project leaders said, adding that volunteers may also learn new skills.
