UW-Extension celebrates master gardener volunteers

Each year, master gardener volunteers donate their time, energy and expertise to make their communities a better place to live. The University of Wisconsin – Division of Extension would like to take this opportunity to recognize master gardeners’ service and commitment to our communities during National Volunteer Week, April 19 to 25.

Last year, master gardener volunteers in Walworth County completed nearly 3,500 hours of volunteer service.

“You may have seen some of our volunteers answering gardening questions at the Lake Geneva Farmer’s Market or Walworth County Fair. You may have attended a community presentation or workshop taught by a master tardener,” UW-Extension Horticulture Outreach Specialist Julie Hill stated in a press release.

Master gardeners help maintain many gardens in local communities, including Congdon Gardens in Delavan, Horticultural Hall in Lake Geneva, Smiles Sensory Garden in Darien, and others at local libraries, churches, government centers and more, Hill said.

Master gardener volunteers also complete many hours of professional development every year.

“Even though we are all experiencing restrictions due to our current national health emergency, master gardener volunteers are still working behind the scenes and participating in educational programs to expand their own knowledge and expertise in horticulture related topics,” Hill stated.

Volunteers are instrumental in carrying out the mission of UW-Extension, Hill said. Volunteers are involved in every aspect of extension’s programming.

“Thank you to all master gardener volunteers for the impact you make on the communities around you,” Hill said.

  1. It would of been nice if you had interviewed some of the actual volunteer master gardeners, and posted pictures of them at work on a project. These kind folks do so much work and add so much beauty to our communities — they’re worth their weight in gold!

    Thank You and Respectfully Submitted,
