The Wilmot Combined Gymnastics team beamed with optimism from event to event in last weekend’s WIAA Division 1 state meet at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School.

The team – composed of Wilmot, Union Grove and Williams Bay students – finished as a state runner-up, thanks in part to a strong score on the balance beam.

Wilmot, which recorded a collective 36.867 on the beam, accounted for a total score of 142.116 to finish second behind winner Hartford (144.75).

Jordin Miller, first-year coach of Wilmot Combined Gymnastics, wasn’t expecting such a high finish with Nicolet and the Menomonee Falls/Germantown teams in the mix.

“I was so proud of how well our girls did on beam. That was by far their best beam score they have gotten all season,” Miller said. “The girls were just as surprised for second as I was. I am so happy for how the girls competed this weekend.”
