Elkhorn looks at ways to further fund parks

By Kellen Olshefski

The City of Elkhorn is pursuing potential ways to raise funds for future parks projects, specifically for Babe Mann Park.

Parks and Recreation Director Karl Sorvick presented two ideas – applying for grants and selling commemorative bricks – to councilmembers at a Committee of the Whole meeting Monday night.

Under the commemorative brick fundraising program, individuals or families could purchase a commemorative brick and have it inscribed for various reasons, such as to commemorate a loved one, recognize those who have given back to the community or simply to show support.

Sorvick said at the Nov. 25 meeting, he went through Wisconsin company That’s My Brick when looking into the potential fundraising opportunity. He said adding a funder cost to the cost of the physical product – the brick – could be a unique opportunity to raise extra funds for Babe Mann Park following the Council’s initial $350,000 investment in Phase 1 of plans for the park.
