The owners of Pesche’s Greenhouse, W4080 Highway 50 W, Lake Geneva, lost their main greenhouse in a fire early Sunday morning.

Lake Geneva Fire Chief Brent Connelly said the department received the call at 2:35 a.m. Sunday.

“I arrived around 2:45 a.m. and the first engine was right behind me and was at the scene by 2:47 a.m.,” Connelly said.

Connelly said the fire was brought under control by 2:55 a.m., less than 10 minutes after the first engine had arrived.

“The guys did a good job bringing the fire down,” said Connelly.

The west portion of the greenhouse was where the fire was located, Connelly said. There was a synthetic drop-down shade that was ablaze. Connelly believes the fire started near or at the shade and grew up towards the ceiling. When firefighters arrived, a portion of the shade was still burning. This caused “drop-down” burning, which is when parts of the fire fall from the ceiling lighting other objects.

Connelly said the fire was kept under control and the fact that the winds had died down was to their advantage.

“The winds had shifted directions at the time of the fire. If the fire had been before 8 p.m. the winds could have pushed the fire towards the other buildings instead of away from them,” he said.

The fire is under investigation and a cause is not yet known.

Calls to Pesche’s were not immediately returned, but according to greenhouse’s Facebook page the shop is closed until further notice and the owners are grateful for support they’ve received.

Pesche’s Greenhouse has been family owned for more than 40 years.
