City of Elkhorn Administrator Jim Heilman informed councilmembers at last week’s City of Elkhorn Common Council meeting that the phase one study at the potential future site of City Hall in the business park had been completed.

Heilman said Oct. 7 that while the study showed mostly virgin soils on the property, there had been some dumping on the southern portion of the business park site, possibly during the completion of the pool project. However, he said, he doesn’t anticipate the City completing any work on that part of the property until a ways down the road, when more testing would be completed, which he expects would still be pretty clean.

He told the council he was scheduled to meet with the architect on Wednesday to discuss space needs and will receive a rough sketch of the layout of what the future City Hall might look like at that time. Heilman said he will have something to present to the Council at some point.

In other business Monday night, the Council voted in favor of approving the purchase and installation of a new processor and cameras for the traffic lights at the intersection of North Wisconsin and Market streets.

The traffic light processor was no longer functioning, and as such, the lights were no longer changing based on vehicular need at the intersection, optimizing the timing for the green lights at the time and causing longer wait times.

The total cost to purchase the new processor and cameras and have them installed – to the tune of $17,474 – was approved unanimously by the Council.

The Council additionally voted in favor of approving a fermented malt beverage and wine license for the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Oktoberfest celebration.

Slated for Saturday, Oct. 19, the annual event will run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in downtown Elkhorn with numerous events and activities, including the annual 5K, live music, a chili cook-off, beer and wine tasting and more.
