Hitting the ground running

Whitewater’s new chamber, tourism director ready to tackle challenging roles

Marie Koch’s retirement officially started June 1. Jenny Quill took the reins of the dual role as executive director of the Whitewater Area Chamber of Commerce and Discover Whitewater (Tourism Council) four days later.

A hectic meeting schedule has dominated her first two months on the job, but Quill said building relationships in the community and area will make a stronger foundation from which to form better partnerships.

“I’ve been hitting the streets, so to speak, trying to meet all of our business owners, people at the university and Innovation Center, the economic development folks in Walworth and Jefferson counties,” Quill said from her office in downtown Whitewater.

And finding this new path in her career started innocently enough.

“I didn’t know anything about it, but my father was reading the paper and saw they were looking,” she said.

“I didn’t know why they would be interested in me. But then my friend, Cherie (Setteducate), told me to just try for it,” Quill added about the person who holds the same position with the Geneva Lake West Chamber of Commerce. “That’s how the process got started, and here I am…”
