The process of assembling the Whitewater Unified School District’s operating budget for the 2019-20 school year is picking up steam with several issues — including state funding — coming into sharper focus.

With voter-approved referendum funding in the mix, WUSD is poised to enter the upcoming school year in the black, said Matthew Sylvester-Knudtson, director of business services.

Based on committed staffing assignments for the upcoming school year and districtwide programs in place, Sylvester-Knudtson’s projected numbers point to WUSD bringing in $25.97 million in revenue this upcoming school year and facing $25.69 million in expenses.

If all goes as planned, Sylvester-Knudtson said WUSD would have a $99,000 surplus in place this upcoming school year.

Sylvester-Knudtson gave the WUSD School Board an update on the state biennial budget when the elected body held its most recent meeting May 28.

Based on information out of the state Joint Finance Committee, Sylvester-Knudtson said WUSD likely would receive more state revenue than anticipated.
