The WIAA Tournament for girls soccer is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 28. For Delavan-Darien high School’s team, the Comets will begin their postseason play on Thursday, May 30 against Big Foot/Williams Bay.

The seeding meeting was held this past week and the Comets got a No. 12 seed. Their opponent, Big Foot/Williams Bay, is the No. 5 seed in the regional and will host the match at Williams Bay High School.

For the seeding meeting, Comets head coach Mike Marse said that he tried to get DDHS seeded higher, but in the end, was somewhat thankful of where his team ended up. Earlier this season, Delavan-Darien played Big Foot/Williams Bay and lost 3-0.

“I do believe that we’re better than last year, We’re just not getting it in the goal. Tuesday when we lost to Waterford, those other two goals came in the last 10 minutes. If we can play a full 90 minutes, we’re a decent team. We won’t give up a lot of goals,” Marse said.

“Big Foot – if we can play strong defensively for 90 minutes – I don’t think it’s an impossible task. We played really strong against them in the first half. The first goal we gave up against them came when our keeper was on the ground. The other two goals came late, and they were different goals, but if we play strong, we can do alright against them,” he added.

Delavan-Darien competed in two games this past week and has two games remaining in the regular season despite the postseason bracket being set.

In the games this past week, the Comets lost to Waterford 3-0 and to Westosha Central 1-0.

The loss to Westosha Central was the team’s first game of the conference tournament. Tonight, the Comets will conclude their matches leading up to the state tournament with a game against Wilmot.

Going into this final week before the tournament, the Comets have a 2-10-5 overall record. The team last season was 5-13-3 going into the postseason. Delavan-Darien then won its first round game before losing in the regional final.
