While Elkhorn Area High School may not have the largest student population, its HOSA group was the first place overall winner at the state competition held in mid-April. HOSA – Future Health Professionals was formerly referred to as Health Occupations Students of America.

The Elkhorn chapter had 24 students qualify for the international competition in June in Orlando, had a student elected as state vice-president and its staff advisor honored in Wisconsin.

Having 24 students qualify for the international competition is the most of any school, Elkhorn HOSA Advisor Stephanie Steinke said. EAHS also has the fifth largest chapter in the state with more than 90 student members.

In Orlando, with a presentation from Surgeon General Jerome M. Adams, the students will learn even more about the healthcare field, network with professionals and compete in various events with students from all over.

“HOSA gives a great opportunity for students to hone-in their leadership and public speaking skills,” Steinke said.

She said a lot of HOSA members are interested in a health occupation field while others just want the leadership experience.

“We don’t turn anyone away. It is a lot of fun to work with the kids,” Steinke said.
