Track wins triangular, softball beats Clinton

The East Troy High School boys and girls track teams ventured into Rock Valley Conference action last week with a triple dual at Edgerton.

And the results were more than positive.

The girls dominated McFarland and Edgerton with a 92-point effort, while the boys had just enough to also record a first-place overall finish at the triangular last Tuesday.

On the girls’ side, East Troy tallied 92 points, followed by McFarland with 58 and Edgerton with 35. The East Troy boys had 73 points, ahead of McFarland’s 67 and Edgerton’s 38.

East Troy swept the girls relays with four first-place finishes.

Winning relay events were the 400-meter team of Sam Mudlaff, Taylor Schmitt, Haley Sheperd and Allison Slusar (56.23); the 800-team of Mackenzie Lindow, Riley Pluess, Emma Scurek and Olivia Chapman (1:59.56); the 1,600-team of Rachel Bottum, Ella Rondeau, Morgan Bartlett and Alexis Olson (4:17.38); and the 3,200-team of Pluess, Bartlett, Lindow and Olson (10:44).

Winning two events were Schmitt in the long jump (14-9) and the triple jump (31-2 ½) and Bottum in the 200 (27.53) and the 400 (59.65).

Also finishing first were Lindow in the 3,200 (13:19.74); Mudlaff in the 100-hurdles (18.3), Scurek in the 300 (54.59), Shepherd in the discus (94-10) and Olivia Fitch in the high jump (4-6).

The East Troy boys were led by Hunter Cliffgard, who won three individual events.

Cliffgard was first in the 110-hurdles (16.15), the 300-hurdles (44.58) and the triple jump (38-9).

Miles McCarthy was first in the 200 (23.82) and the long jump (20-8).

Also finishing first were Nate Fox in the 3,200 (9:57.76); the 3,200-meter relay team of Jack Harris, Caleb Edwards, Jonah Edwards and Connor McFarland (9:08); and Jake Dessart in the discus (131-2).

Both squads are back in action Thursday when they host the East Troy Invitational at 4:30 p.m.

Softball rolls past Clinton

The East Troy softball team scored 30 runs and banged out 30 hits in a 10-0, 20-2 RVC doubleheader sweep Saturday at Clinton.

East Troy (6-2, 5-2 RVC) scored seven runs in the second inning of the opener and three more in the fourth to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Luci Kapelka led the 11-hit attack with three hits and three RBI. Sarah Gilpatrick pitched three innings to earn the win, as she walked one and struck out one. Sophia Heimos walked one in two innings of work.

The Trojans’ erupted in Game 2.

East Troy scored in all four of its at bats, including eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to close things out.

Megan Verbeten finished with three hits, including a home run, three runs scored and five RBI to lead the Trojans. Other leaders were Heimos (three hits, run, four RBI), Isabella Atkinson (four hits, three runs, three RBI), Erin Rice (three hits, four runs, four RBI) and Sydney Raddeman (three hits, three runs).

Verbeten also earned the complete-game win, as she walked just one and struck out six in five innings.

East Troy was back in action Tuesday against visiting Beloit Turner and travels to McFarland on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. RVC matchup with the Spartans.
