Through the lens

Photography workshop offered in Whitewater

Dr. Mark Lawrence McPhail will host a workshop, “Through a Critical Lens: Expressive Understanding in the Art of Photography,” from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 at UW-Whitewater.

Dr. Mark Lawrence McPhail, Dean of the College of Arts and Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, photographer and president of the board of directors of the Whitewater Arts Alliance, will host a workshop for experienced and amateur photographers next month.

McPhail’s workshop, “Through a Critical Lens: Expressive Understanding in the Art of Photography” will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 at UW-Whitewater.

“The workshop will provide photographers a starting point for discerning and articulating basic principles and concepts related to the description, interpretation and evaluation of photographs,” said McPhail.

The first hour will be focused on basic photographic techniques, followed by the art and science of visual criticism.

The third hour will focus on how technology can shape and define photographic quality, and the workshop will conclude with a review of photographs submitted by participants.

“My workshop will focus on a foundational approach to understanding and explaining photographic techniques and quality. My hope is that it will inspire others to enjoy photography and all it has to offer,” said McPhail.

As an undergraduate, McPhail took photography courses at Emerson College in Boston, and had photographs published in the schools’ literary magazine.

During graduate school he worked part time as a photojournalist for the Amherst Record, and later as a photographic and editorial consultant at Digital Equipment Corporation.

His photographs have been featured in the academic journal Critical Studies in Mass Communication, and on the covers of the Bulletin of the Western College Alumni Association and the Modern Water Gardener.

His work has been exhibited in Dallas, Texas at the Cerulean Gallery, the McKinney Avenue Contemporary, the African American Museum, in Columbus, Ohio at the Mac Worthington Gallery, and in Whitewater at the Crossman Gallery at UW-Whitewater.
