Firebirds soar to new heights

Wisconsin School for the Deaf’s basketball teams and cheerleading squad recently participated in the Great Plains Schools for the Deaf tournament in Minnesota recently. Cheerleaders, basketball teams compete in tournament

The basketball and cheerleading team from the Wisconsin School for the Deaf participated in the Great Plains Schools for the Deaf tournament at Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf in Faribault, Minn. recently.

Despite the cold weather and snowstorm, according to school and coaching staff, the tournament was a go, held Feb. 6 through 10.

Among the highlights was WSD having a cheerleading season this year “to show the spirit of the Firebirds soaring to new heights,” staff touted.

In the cheerleading portion of the tournament at Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, WSD faced off against five other deaf schools and earned second place…

The girls basketball team also won second place and players Lucero Arreola and Alicia Arispe were selected to the All-Tournament team…

The boys team played Kansas in the opener at the Great Plains Schools for the Deaf tournament and overall, WSD struggle scoring on offense, ultimately losing to Kansas, 52-39.

But the Firebirds fought back in the consolation game… and gave head coach Michael Eldred his 100th win as the WSD coach.
