The Delavan-Darien School Board selected a new member – Tiffany Schutt – at a special meeting Jan. 29 to replace Monica Los, who resigned on Nov. 21 because she moved out of the district. Schutt will fill the position until the April 2 election.

Three people submitted letters of interest to fill the seat. Two of the three, Schutt and David Henriott, also filed the necessary paperwork to run for the seat in April. Whoever was appointed must run in April to retain the seat. The board decided at its Jan. 17 meeting to interview the two candidates who had filed the paperwork because board members said it did not make sense to appoint someone not interested in running for the seat in April.

The board was forced to appoint someone to the seat instead of leaving it open until the April election due to board policy, which requires a vacant seat on the board be filled within 60 days of the vacancy.

Board President Jeff Scherer said the board could not be concerned with giving one candidate an advantage over the other as the incumbent in April because it had no choice – the board was required to fill the seat now.

The interviews took place on Jan. 29 and then the board voted twice. The first vote ended in a 3-3 tie, so the board asked each candidate one more question and then voted again resulting in a 4-2 victory for Schutt.
