Chiefs wrestlers head to regional competition

As was to be expected, the young Big Foot-Williams Bay wrestling team had its share of good and bad moments at last Saturday’s Rock Valley Conference Tournament at Beloit Turner.

It’s all part of the learning process.

Big Foot’s Raul Rojas advanced to the finals at 145 pounds to lead the Chiefs, who were ninth overall with 29.5 points.

Evansville/Albany won the team title with 251.5 points, followed by Whitewater with 200.5, East Troy with 168, Edgerton with 161 and Beloit Turner with 134.

“Saturday was OK,” Big Foot coach Tyler Heck said. “We went out and competed well, but some of our guys made some mistakes early on that they couldn’t overcome.

“Having two (wrestlers) on the podium is never a bad day, but we definitely thought some of our kids would be better throughout the day, so that was hard to deal with.”

Rojas (20-8 overall) defeated Jefferson’s Braeden Kalmon by technical fall 25-9 in the first round, followed by a major decision 17-9 win over Evansville’s Evan Senter in the semifinals.

In the finals, Rojas fell by sudden victory, 10-8, to Whitewater’s David Cushman.

“Raul has continued to improve and wrestled possibly the best tournament of the year,” Heck said. “He had the right mentality going in…”
