On Jan. 26, Whitewater High School’s wrestling team competed in a 14-team invitational at Hustisford. The Whippets ended up placing second behind Prairie du Chien.

Two of Whitewater’s 12 wrestlers placed first and six others finished second, four of them losing to foes from Prairie du Chien.

The two champions were Cooper Hammond at 106 pounds and Trenten Zahn at 120, both of them winning their title matches via pins.

Marcus DePorter (126 pounds), Cody Gamble (132), Jaden Salmieri (138), Carter Friend (152), Wil Leibbrand (182) and Gehrig Monday (195) placed second.

Whitewater’s final dual of the season, scheduled for Tuesday against Janesville Craig, was canceled. Up next for the Whippets is the conference tournament, which is slated to start at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Beloit Turner High School.

The following Saturday (Feb. 9) is the regional tournament at East Troy.
