On Jan. 10, the Delavan-Darien High School wrestling team hosted its final meet of the season and it came in a dual against Burlington. Comets head coach Diego Avila said that he took a few forfeits in the meet by only sending six wrestlers out to compete, but of the six, three ended up as winners.

“As far as the team goes, I know we’re pretty young and they had a lot of ranked wrestlers, so I wasn’t trying to throw my younger guys out to the wolves per se,” Avila said. “We did pretty well with the six we had. We were close to having four win.

“Eric Gonzalez is one of our seniors and he actually hadn’t been able to wrestle at home yet since everybody has forfeited to him and he got to wrestle, so it was a pretty big match for him. I’m always about momentum and energy and I just sent out my experienced wrestlers. We went out and it seemed like we had a close dual because of sending out six, but, the score was spread due to the forfeits. Overall, the atmosphere and crowd was good.”

Winners against Burlington were Eric Gonzalez, Giovanni Gonzalez and Mason Hennessey. Two days later, Delavan-Darien competed in an invitational at Brookfield Central High School and the team had four members reach the finals, while two won their respective weight classes.
