Comets fall to Elks

The Delavan-Darien Comets knew they had a tough task ahead of them on Jan. 3 and the Elks didn’t disappoint in an 80-38 win over the Comets in Delavan.

“Elkhorn is a good team,” Coach Chris Hembrook said. “They are very deep and it showed on Thursday.”

The Comets did not do themselves any favors in the early going as Elkhorn ran out to a 9-0 lead. Elkhorn’s Billy Lauderdale scored the first basket of the game off a steal. The Comets then turned it over on three consecutive possessions, but Elkhorn failed to take advantage. The Elks then applied their full-court press defense and scored twice off steals. Another steal and a turnover led to a three-pointer by Devon Davey the Elks were up 9-0.

“Not sure why we came out the way we did,” Hembrook said. “We talked about their pressure and how to combat it and we just didn’t execute.”

Hembrook said once his Comets calmed down, they handled the press the way they should have from the start.
