Sex offender charged with having child porn

A Lake Geneva man was scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 2 on 14 counts of possession of child pornography.

Anthony M. Schmidt, 29, was charged Dec. 13 in Walworth County Circuit Court with 14 counts of possession of child pornography and violating the Sex Offender Registry.

According to the criminal complaint, the state Department of Justice traced child pornographic images downloaded to an IP address that belonged to Schmidt’s grandmother in Elkhorn. Police approached Schmidt at his place of employment, and he admitted the email address used to download the image was his, and he admitted moving from his grandmother’s home to Lake Como with his fiancé Nov. 1 without notifying the state Sex Offender Registry as required.

Schmidt admitting using his phone to view child pornography, and investigators found multiple images of underage girls naked and in sexual poses that were uploaded using Schmidt’s Gmail account, according to the complaint.

Schmidt was convicted of possession of child pornography in 2014, sentenced to three years in prison and required to register with the state Sex Offender Registry for life.
