An initial appearance is scheduled for Dec. 27 for an Elkhorn man charged with taking a woman’s checks and stealing items from her property in Williams Bay.

Branden D. Peters, 25, was charged Dec. 11 in Walworth County Circuit Court with burglary of a building or dwelling, identity theft to obtain money or a credit card, misdemeanor theft and obstructing an officer.

According to the criminal complaint, a worker for Gwenda Klein arrived at Klein’s Wood Street property on Nov. 7 and saw Peters trying to jack up the worker’s trailer, which was about 290 feet from where the worker had left it the night before. Peters then left the property, and the worker found the garage door to Klein’s guesthouse open and items sitting outside the guesthouse, according to the complaint. The worker’s tools, Peters’ tools and items that belonged to Klein were in the back of the trailer, the complaint states.

Police arrested Peters on a warrant, and, when being booked into jail, checks and a checkbook that belonged to Klein were found in Peters’ pockets, according to the complaint.
