The 2017-18 wrestling season ended with East Troy’s Tommy Larson and Waterford’s Hayden Halter on top of the 106-pound weight class in Division 1 and 2.

So when a chance presented itself during Saturday’s East Troy Howard/Manley Duals to match those two up in an early-season showdown, the East Troy coaching staff jumped at it.

It didn’t disappoint.

Halter gave Larson his only blemish of the day with a pinfall victory in 4:55 at 120 pounds. Larson closed his tournament with a 3-1 mark at 120 and 1-0 at 113.

“Although he was unable to win the match, just accepting the challenge (to face Halter was) an opportunity as a measuring stick (that) was important,” East Troy coach Mike Howard said. “For the day, all of our guys received some great experience.

“They all need more mat time, and hopefully, we can turn the corner as a team.”

Larson earned wins at 120 pounds over Baraboo by pin in 37 seconds and over West Allis Central by technical fall, 17-2, along with a forfeit. His other victory came at 113 pounds by major decision over Baraboo.

Also placing 4-1 for East Troy were Jackson Dedick (170) and Jake Dessart (182).
