The City of Elkhorn Common Council voted 5-0 in favor of adopting its 2019 budget and tax levy at its Nov. 19 meeting.

The 2019 budget calls for a $5.51 million tax levy, with a tax rate of about $7.40 per $1,000 of assessed value in the coming year. Overall, this equates to about a 2 percent decrease from last year’s tax rate and would equal about $740 for the city’s portion of the tax bill on a home assessed at $100,000.

As in past years, contractual staffing for the Elkhorn Fire Department was one of the big items in the 2019 budget, with an increase of as much as $150,000 over the previous year. Staffing at the fire department is expected to continue to be a concern in future years.

Alderman Ron Dunwidde was absent from Monday’s meeting.
