Whitewater Unified officials have given a green light to a pair of capital spending plans that will benefit two of the district’s elementary schools.

The WUSD School Board on Oct. 22 voted to award Pewaukee-based Century Fence Company a $7,353 contract to replace a chain-link fence around portions of Washington Elementary School.

“Containing the 4K-kindergarten playground at Washington exists a 4-foot-tall chain-link fence, in poor condition,” Matthew Sylvester-Knudtson, director of business services, wrote in a memo.

Of the new structure, Sylvester-Knudtson said, “The location of the fence will be modified to contain the area differently for better supervision. The replacement will occur after the new playground is installed.”

Sylvester-Knudtson said the district received quotes from six companies. Administrators recommended moving forward with Century.

The board at its most recent regular meeting also set in motion plans for a snowplow contractor at Lakeview Elementary School, which is the only facility within WUSD’s footprint that is situated outside the City of Whitewater.

“Annually, we contract for snow removal at Lakeview Elementary,” Sylvester- Knudtson wrote in a memo. “Internally, we are unable to plow Lakeview while maintaining the in-city schools.”

The School Board granted the plowing contract to locally based Jakob’s Lawn Care and Property Services.

Business owner Jakob Gmur, a former WUSD student, submitted a quote of $80 per hour for base snow removal services, in addition to 20 cents per pound of salt and sand applied to the parking lot.

In other recent business, the School Board approved two donations.

The Kiwanis Club of Whitewater has provided $1,000 in funding to the district for the Breakfast for Family Connections program.

Also approved was a $1,000 grant from Generac, which will be applied to Ferradermis, the robotics team at Whitewater High School.
