Residents of the Whitewater Unified School District spoke Tuesday night — and loudly.

Voters approved an operational referendum by a 3,679 to 2,084 margin, or nearly 64 percent support from taxpayers in the nine precincts in Walworth County.

It was approved by 54 percent in two Rock County precincts and by 66 percent of those in four Jefferson County precincts.

The nonrecurring referendum covers four fiscal years, 2019-20 through 2022-23.

Despite the typical anxious moments since the seven-member Whitewater School Board approved placing the referendum on the ballot in August, District Administrator Mark Elworthy said the focus now shifts 360 degrees and looking forward.

“We are so appreciative of the dialogue we had along the way and being able to tell our story,” Elworthy said shortly after the votes had been tallied. “It was a two-way communication, and we learned a lot. We know this is our third referendum in five years, so we value our partnerships with the city and townships and will continue to build on those.”
