A referendum to exceed operating costs in the Delavan-Darien School District passed Tuesday, according to unofficial election results.

Vote totals on a question to allow the district to exceed revenue limits by $2.8 million for four years are:

✔Yes                         3,711

   No                           2,861

More than 56 percent of voters cast yes votes and more than 43 percent voted no on the referendum in Tuesday’s general election.

At a community meeting Oct. 23 at Darien Town Hall, District Administrator Jill Sorbie and Business Administrator Anthony Klein addressed 20 community members in a question-and-answer format for more than an hour.

After a failed referendum in April, the district had a tough spring when it had to make cuts, Sorbie said. More than 39 teachers and staff were laid off, 2 1/2 administrators were laid off, and Darien Elementary School was closed. Sorbie said every item in the budget was looked at and no area was spared of cuts, which resulted in much larger class sizes with as many as 36 students in some high school classes.
