Prior to Friday night’s WIAA Division 3 playoff opener at New Berlin West, the East Troy football team had advanced to the postseason eight previous times.

But each time before, the Trojans saw their journey end there.

Until now.

The 2018 East Troy team etched itself in the program’s record book with a 28-26 victory, its first in the WIAA playoff series. The win improved the fifth-seeded Trojans to 8-2 and sends them to a matchup this Friday at top-seeded Waukesha Catholic Memorial, a 45-7 winner over eighth-seeded Jefferson.

“Winning a game in the playoffs was huge for the program,” East Troy coach Jeff Crandall said. “The players have been working hard all year, and it paid off on Friday. Being the first to do something is a great accomplishment, and it is a memory that all our players now have.”

Next up for the Trojans is a second-round matchup at Catholic Memorial tonight. The Crusaders, who were second in the Division 1-filled Classic 8 Conference, were ranked first in the state in Division 3 at the end of the regular season.
